Winter Opening 2019

🎶 It's beginning to look like we're opening
We even have some snow
We'll be baking tasty tarts
To warm you hungry hearts
For your winter celebrations this year! 🎶

I've been singing this little ditty for the past few days and Bill kindly pointed out I have combined two different Christmas songs.

I say that makes it an original!

Prep begins tomorrow! If your in, around or near the Haliburton Highlands next weekend we sure hope you'll pay us a visit!

Stay warm and dry, my friends, and have a wonderful weekend!

Closed for the Season

Once again, it’s about to get very still and quiet around here for a while. I hate good-byes. I get all teary-eyed and weepy and it turns into a whole messy thing. I used to sob while writing these. Not this year. I’ve written so many of them now I know this isn’t good-bye, just so long for now.

There are no pretences here. Bill and I aren’t solving the world’s problems or developing much needed cures. We’re not celebrities or winning awards for what we do. We bake. We operate a tiny tart store in a small town carved out of the forest. On a cosmic scale - my choice of reference is a tribute to Bill’s ceaseless quest to learn about our universe - we are one, single, solitary star. We’re not trying to outshine all the others; we’re trying to shine just enough to be discoverable and that you and you and you discovered us and pointed us out to others never ceases - to us - to be remarkable!

What a phenomenal season! What positive energy and atmosphere! It was truly incredible, my friends. Around about year five I wrote a post I refer to as “Anything But a Bakery”. I was very candid in explaining why I didn’t want to open The Little Tart.

Am I ever glad we ignored my misgivings.

I love this business. I love all of you who visit our little shop and who join me here online. I love the little community we call The Little Tart.

Bill and I are so proud of what we have all come together to create here; a place and a page where joy and happiness reign. There’s enough negativity in the world. We strive to drown it out, if only for a moment, but in that moment – Wow – what an incredible experience to be a part of!

Though we’re at the end of our regular season, we’ll wrap up our eleventh season – life and weather willing - with two days in December (21st and 22nd) and then our thoughts turn to next year.

And so, my friends, we thank you again for an incredible eleventh season. It has been an honour and a privilege to bake for you. We hope you’ll join us when we do this again next year.

Be safe, be healthy, be happy.

Does anybody have a tissue?

In the store and here online you motivate us and we consider ourselves so fortunate to be able to interact with so many fabulous people.

Now that our season is underway we'll be adding some more open days. We're going to repeat last year because it worked out perfectly!

Thank you so much! We hope you are enjoying the sunny weather and have a wonderful Canada Day!

Anticipating an Opening Date

Yesterday the sun was shining, the birds were singing and we were out picking up supplies, enjoying the day and looking forward to the beginning of a new season. Over the past few weeks we have done a stock run for dry goods and have been buying up shiny new trays and spatulas and all that good stuff that gets us in the mood to open.

But that was yesterday. We woke up to this mess this morning and a new reality set in. Don't get me wrong, we are looking forward to a new season; we're just trying to figure out when it's going to begin.

In our thirteen years here in Donald, this has been the hardest winter we've been through and we know that's true for everyone. We have been dealing with the same problems most people here deal with come spring; flooding - in our basement and in our garage and for the first time ever we were watching the meltoff very carefully because it came very close to invading the store and our livingroom.

But I'm not here to compain. (I know, too late.) We're all sick and tired of winter and that's why we want to get our doors open because that is the true sign, for us anyway, that it is finally over.

And so, my friends, we have chosen two dates (and no later). If Mother Nature cooperates, our goal is to open on April 27th. If she decides to be a total b... pest, we will open the following weekend. We have to be able to get some work done out front and be able to put our signs out.

Thank you so much for sticking with us here in the off season. We know we didn't have much to say but you know the old saying; If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

We're looking forward to our 11th season and can't wait to see everyone again. We've missed you!

I'll keep you up to date and I will post a definite date as soon as we're sure. Meanwhile we'll be cleaning and scrubbing and getting the store spic-and-span and ready for you!

Wherever you are we hope you're warmer and dryer than we are!

Have a wonderful weekend!
